Hi guys, have you checked out this KATA i1? Its an Android ICS phone, with 4.5-inch qHD screen, running a dual-core chip boasting with 1GB of RAM. It is locally selling here in the Philippines from OWTEL shops. Phone seems interesting enough, we’ve managed to cover it up with a video and some photos here on this post. Read on.
If you might remember, I had already featured some stuff from KATA, the KATA MAYA AiO PC and the KATA iDroid S. All of these are from OWTEL shop here in the Philippines. The last time I went by SM Megamall’s Cyberzone, I had spotted a new unit from them, the KATA i1.
KATA i1 Review and Hands-on
This time, their latest phone runs on the latest dual-core MT6577 processor from MediaTek and boasts with a 4.5-inches of qHD screen. What makes it a stand-out compared to other local brands with Chinese-origin phones here in the country is its 1GB of RAM, yes plus that really nice screen and premium-looking design.
I tried searching for possible OEM of this KATA i1 just for an ease of looking for a specs sheet but to no avail. My first bets were the Amoi N820 and the NEO NO2-M but there are some mismatched parameters, however they are all at the 4.5-inch/qHD/MT6577/1GB RAM category.

KATA i1 Review
No doubt on the performance of this KATA i1, with its dual-core processor expect smoothness along with the ICS environment. The MT6577 chip matched with a PowerVR SGX 531 GPU is no doubt, very much capable of playing HD games or high quality multimedia files.
The 1GB RAM enables users to enjoy seamless multi-tasking as you get more than the normal 512MB. In this case, it lessen your worry about RAM optimizations. Just run apps on the fly and don’t fear of getting out of memory errors and sudden force-close of apps due to running out of RAM.
The guy I was coincidentally with at SM Cyberzone that day, decided to buy the i1 when we both found out that it has 1GB of RAM. No doubt that this is a major turn-on for the geeks. OWTEL should point this out as well, as I noticed that they are missing this very important spotlight of the KATA i1.
The internal memory, however, seems to be the cost-cutting part here. It just only have a 512MB of internal memory you can use, 503MB to be exact. Still, you can use an up to 32GB of SD card with this device, and Android ICS allows you to install apps on the SD card so this might not be that bad at all. Besides, you can also use an Android tweak to increase your internal memory by sharing a portion of your external SD card.
The screen is a 4.5 inches qHD display. Really nice display of 960 x 540 pixels in resolution. I think its an IPS type as it still looks good on every viewing angles. It outputs 244ppi of pixel density, and I think this is among the first Chinese phones to be offered here with that screen parameters, though other brands plan to come up with theirs’ soon.
The 8.0 megapixels snappers with LED flash is really an asset, paired with that is its 1.3MP front-facing camera. So we can expect here better quality of video-calls, native 3G or even Skype’s. Even though I have not tested it yet, I can assure you that you can do video calls on this device as this runs on MT6577 chip.
Its a dual-SIM phone, and dual-standby. 3G on one SIM is supported, and as expected with these device, you can easily switch which SIM will have that 3G reception, without physically swapping the SIMs on their slots.
Other basic Android stuff, sensors and parameters are present on the KATA i1 as well. However, its the 1600mAh battery capacity which clearly speaks to my mind that this phone isn’t just for me. Im a heavy user of an Android phone, more of surfing the web via 3G on my mobile so I don’t think a full charge of this wont last a day for me. But who knows, we might still take away our words if we can actually use this on a day-to-day basis. Its just a judgment of a basic math here.
Still, if you can bear with that, the KATA i1 is never a bad phone at all. I had told the guy I met, that the phone has a mediocre battery rating capacity, and he said that its okay for him as he’s not that a heavy-user, maybe just unlike me.
KATA i1 Photos
Here’s some photos of the KATA i1. Thanks to the very kind saleslady on the OWTEL booth in SM Megamall’s Cyberzone for letting us use their demo units for this purpose.

KATA i1 unboxing
^Kind of weird that the wall charger is not white. LOL
KATA i1 – top
^Here’s the top view. As you can observe, white color on back and just black on front surface.
KATA i1 – back
^Really clean looking back surface.
KATA i1 Video
Here’s a short hands-on video of the KATA i1 as well. I just played with its UI, showcased its really nice looking and sleek design, then tested the installed Angry Gran Run and Temple Run Brave games.
I swear the screen isn’t that not-so responsive. It might be my wet-fingers and the plastic covering on the screen that’s why you can see some epic fail gaming here. LOL The screen is glass and capacitive, so expect that when you remove the plastic and doesnt have wetting hands, the experience is just smooth and swift.
KATA i1 Pricing and Availability
The KATA i1 is being sold for just Php8,499. It might be a bit hefty for some, but I think that is just right. The phone looks premium, and of course the specs are above par the average with those cheaper alternatives.
It is also being sold online at their site for $210, but I think it will be better if you get it from an OWTEL booth/kiosk/shop located on plenty of malls in the country. I think if they try to offer the phone for a lower pricing, it will sell more or maybe some sale promotion might be its big break to make some noise in this local smartphone’s race scene.
Well, that’s it for now guys. We just shared you our hands-on and specs-review of the KATA i1, let’s see if we can still have the chance to come up with a full and in-depth review of this phone, if we managed to score a review unit from OWTEL.
