Lenovo A789 Specs Review: Affordable 4″ ICS, MT6577 1GHz, Dual SIM with 3G

Not sure if this new MT6577 phone from Lenovo is already available in the Philippines but here I am to show you this newer Android smartphone from the well-established Chinese smartphone manufacturer. Check out the specs and my verdict of this Lenovo A789 after the short jump.

I do not have the unit but I am here to present the specs of this Lenovo A789 based from online sources. So let’s begin.

Lenovo A789

Lenovo A789

The Lenovo A789 sports the latest MediaTek CPU chip, which is the MT6577 (an advancement of the MT6575) which on papers; sports a dual core 1GHz chip. Not sure about it but it was claimed to be faster and better than its predecessor, of course. I had my experience on using a MT6575 phone, and I can say that its really fast already, then how come more with this MT6577?

Taking a closer look at the Lenovo A789 CPU, with the MTK6577 ARMv7 Cortex-A9 Dual-core 1.0GHz and PowerVR SGX531 Ultra GPU; this makes this phone capable of running HD games and rendering the ICS environment at ease, lag-free. That’s a very powerful chip already. I have high trust on the MediaTek CPU and PowerVR GPU; this newer advancement of Android chips technology hasn’t failed me yet.

Lenovo A789 Antutu Benchmark

Lenovo A789 Antutu Benchmark: it is able to surpass the Kindle Fire and HTC Evo 3D on performance test

The A789 runs on Android 4.0.4 OS with English as default language. Some online Chinese shops are able to offer installation of the following languages as per request of buyer: Italian, Russian, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Finnish, Greek, Malay, Polish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Indonesia, Persian, Thai, Romanian, Brazil Portuguese, Czech, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Slovenian, Serbian, Arabic, Hebrew and others.

Memory-wise, the A789 has 512MB RAM, with 4GB eMMC ROM. I’m guessing, same with my phone that was advertised to have 4GB ROM; it will only have 2.xGB of usable memory. Still, its too much already knowing that it can support  external Micro SD Memory Card (TF-Card) on 32GB Class 12 maximum capacity.

Having a design that doesnt looks bulky enough, the A789 showcases a 126.6 x 65.4 x 13.2 mm dimension. Enough for its 4.0″ screen. It doesnt weighs too heavy at 154.8g with battery.

This Lenovo A789 shines with its 4.o” WVGA screen, having 480 x 800 resolution at 16M Colors (TBD). Note that this is a TFT-LCD, not IPS so dont expect good viewing at complicated angles. But with straight eye angles, there will be no problems at all. The capacitive multi touch screen supports up to 5 points.

Good thing about these China-made Android smartphones is: they have Dual-SIM support. This smartphone can support WCDMA/3G on the first SIM card slot only. Frequency bands are as of follows: GSM/GPRS/EDGE at 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, WCDMA/HSPA/HSPA+ at  2100MHz.

Available color of the A789 is black only, as of the moment. Android 4.1 JellyBean update isn’t available yet, but its possible. We can’t still say as of this time. Built In GPS & A.GPS is also supported with the unit.

Available connectivity options are as follows: Bluetooth with EDR & A2DP, Wi-Fi : IEEE 802.11 b/g/n (supports Wi-Fi hotspot), and micro USB 2.0 slot for charging and data transfer.

Lenovo A789

The Lenovo A789 is packed with 5.o megapixel camera on rear and with Auto Focus. Front has 0.3MP VGA snapper that supports Skype Video Calls. The smartphone is able to shoot 3GP videos at 720P quality with 1280×720 resolution. This is with audio and maximum of 30 minutes.

This A789 is juiced up with Li-ion Batteries at 2000mAh. That is too much energy juice for your Android ICS smartphone. Similar with the Lenovo P700, this makes the A789 an Android device for long usage at single battery charge.

UI-wise, the A789 has the trademark UI of Lenovo. Clover-like launcher and sleek circular app icons.

Here’s an unboxing and hands-on video of the Lenovo A789, courtesy of FastCardTech:

Price and Verdict

Overall, with all that higher-end specs you could get with this Lenovo A789 phone, I can say that this phone is already a great phone. The good thing with this is: its very cheap at $176 only. Converting that to peso, we could have an estimate of more than Php7,000 price only. You cannot get a specs that matches that what the Lenovo A789 have, on that same price range.

I am not sure if this is already available locally here on the Philippines, I wish we could possibly do our own hands-on review of the unit. Let’s hope Lenovo PH is reading this. hehe. :D

If you are interested with the phone, I suggest getting it from FastCardTech. Its the only store I know that sells it for the cheapest price it could get. Some stores sells it for relatively higher price. So getting it from FastCardTech is the smartest move. Check it out on FCT from this link.
